The Enchanted Mountain

The Messner Mountain Museum in Sigmundskron Castle in Bolzano - the Enchanted Mountain, as he calls it - is the centrepiece of Reinhold Messners mountain museums. Visitors can experience an insight into the world of the mountains on a tour of the castle and grounds, its temporary exhibitions and its six towers, which narrate the origins, the vastness and the conquests of mountains. Reinhold Messner and architect Werner Tscholl have created a blend of art, religion and ideology which comes together to form a holistic work of art which is unparalleled and, in so many respects, one of a kind. Born in South Tyrol in 1944, Reinhold Messner has broken boundary after boundary as a rock-climber, expedition mountaineer, pole & desert crosser. For four decades, he has built up a wealth of experience from every corner of the Earth which has enabled him to create a chain of museums themed around mountains. Reinhold Messner is also fascinated by human nature and how it unfolds when people are exposed to the elements and pushed to the very limits of their resources.
